My love for the French language has become one of the defining passions of my academic and personal life. Throughout high school, I pursued the most advanced French courses available at Kent Denver School, including AP French Language and Culture and Post-AP courses such as Advanced Topics in French. After exhausting my school's French curriculum, I developed an independent study focused on Francophone Africa to further my language proficiency and explore the region's cultures, histories, and societies.
Beyond academics, I have strengthened my fluency through cultural immersion experiences in both Brest and Talloires, France, where I lived with host families and practiced my French-speaking skills in an environment. Today, I continue applying my language skills at Project Worthmore in Denver, teaching English and digital literacy to Francophone refugees and immigrants.
Together, these experiences have transformed French from an academic subject into a means of connecting with communities, understanding different perspectives, and pursuing my broader interest in Africa and international education.
TUFTS EUROPEAN SUMMIT | SUMMER 2025
During the summer of 2025, I spent five weeks in Talloires, France, participating in an immersive academic program through Tufts University's European Center. I lived with a French host family, allowing me to practice French daily and experience French culture beyond the classroom.
At the Tufts European Center, I completed two university-level courses: La Langue et la Culture Française and International Relations in a Changing World. In my French course, I studied the history, politics, and culture of the Savoie region through lectures, discussions, and visits to historical sites. Conducted entirely in French, the course challenged me to expand my vocabulary and communicate about complex social and political issues.
DENVER YOUNG AMBASSADORS | SPRING 2024
In spring 2024, I participated in a two-week cultural exchange in Brest, France, through Denver Sister Cities International. I lived with a French host family, attended a local high school, and practiced French daily with students and community members.
As part of the reciprocal exchange, I later hosted a French student in Denver, introducing them to my school, family, and daily life in Colorado. The experience gave me an opportunity to develop my conversational fluency while experiencing French culture firsthand.
Together, these experiences taught me that language is more than a means of communication; it opens doors to meaningful relationships and perspectives I would otherwise never encounter. Living with French host families and immersing myself in their communities showed me how stepping outside my own cultural environment can deepen my understanding of others and create connections that transcend national borders.
